I bought the new Foo Fighters dual disc album, In Your Honor, while at lunch today. In fact, I sprung for the "Limited Edition/Deluxe Version" that is a dual-disc format. This means side one of each disc is a CD and the other side is a DVD. The DVD side offers a making of documentary and the full album (both CD's) in full 5.1 audio. However, I didn't realize at first, but the CD side claims to be copy protected (DVD's are almost always copy protected)!
I don't share my music (except in iTunes "My Music" sharing for others at work). However, I believe I should have the right to make copies of my music (for instance leave the CD in my car, and listen to my MP3's at home on the iPOD or at work on my PC). I shouldn't need three copies of the album to accomplish this.
As soon as you show me a starving music exectuve, I'll change my mind. I'm not trying to *STEAL* anything. I just want to listen to the music I PAID FOR where I want to. The people who are going to steal it, know the way around this anyway!
Also, as a side note, why worried about the MP3's when I can make full rippable copies of the DVD side no problem (with the right software)?! At the very least I can listen to the DVD version at home, and leave the CD in my car. But, I'll be leary to buy any more "COPY PROTECTED" CD's again from the Music Mafia.
The good news is, the same software that unlocks the DVD seemed to work wonders for the "Copy Protection" as well. I was eventually able to make a copy to listen to at work on my PC, and am able to leave the CD in the car. iTunes imported them no problem as 192K MP3's after some trying.
And, take note: I also bought the new Sharika album today, and it also had the dual-disc format and same copy protection scheme. And the same issue. A minor hassle, but not a big deal. Still the solution is to lower CD prices, not add more expensive copy proetction schemes. If this continues in the future, I'll be turned off from buying music for sure.
Oh, and the review: The Foo Fighters Album is great. Disc One a bit heavier, and disc two is much softer and more mellow. Great album. Shakira is good as well, but if singing in Spanish is gonna bug you, then pass on it. I'd write more, but all my energy went into being peeved at the copy protection!
NOTE: I copied this blog with editing as my Amazon review of the album.
